Tried this from Microsoft forum: How about reversing the order? Install VS 2010 first, then install SQL Server. If I can't run the SQL Server repair from the Visual Studio 2010 DVD how can I make sure I remove all the programs/files/register entries? Just want to clean it up before moving to another machine. Lastly Microsoft forum said to install on a clean machine (not happy). I downloaded SQL Server Express 2008 and uninstalled and re-installed several time and still the same error. Studio 2010 DVD I failed to find what it is looking for. From the microsoft forum it is suggested to run a repair. I tried this, but it looks for a directory for the files from where it was installed. I have tried all the remedies that I could find on the internet. It installed OK and works, but I still have SQL Server 2008 Configuration Manager failure. I installed SQL Server 2008 Management Studio with hopes that it would fix the problem it didn't.
